How we handle your data.
Plainly: watercraft only collects the data we actually need, only uses it for the things you'd expect, and gives you full control over deleting or exporting it. We never sell your data, and we never share it with third parties for advertising.
Who we are
watercraft is a precision logging instrument for carp anglers, currently in private beta. The team is based in the United Kingdom. For data-protection purposes we are the data controller for the information described below.
If you have any questions about this policy or your data, the fastest way to reach us is privacy@watercraft.app.
What we collect, and why
When you join the waitlist
- Your email address. So we can send you the welcome email and updates as we get closer to launch.
- The timestamp of your signup. So we know when you joined.
- The page or referral source that brought you to us (only if your browser passes this on). Helps us understand where our audience comes from.
When you buy a Founder's Lifetime spot
- Payment information. Handled entirely by Stripe — we never see or store your card details. Stripe holds the card data per their own privacy policy and PCI-compliant infrastructure.
- Your shipping address. Required for the metal identity card. We pass this to our engraving and shipping partner only when fulfilling your card.
- Your name and email. Captured at Stripe checkout, used to create your founder account, send the receipt, and confirm shipping.
When you use the watercraft app
- Session data you create — swims you map, sessions you log, photos you upload, dictation transcripts, conditions data you record. This is your data; we hold it on your behalf so the app works.
- Account information — your email address, your founder ID (if applicable), and any preferences you set.
- Basic technical information — device type, app version, anonymous error logs. Used only to make the app work and fix bugs.
How we use your data
We use the data described above only for the following purposes:
- Operating the watercraft service and your account
- Sending you transactional emails (receipts, account notifications, important service updates)
- Sending you occasional product updates if you've asked to receive them, with a clear unsubscribe link in every message
- Fulfilling Founder's Lifetime orders, including shipping the metal card
- Improving the app based on anonymous usage patterns and error reports
- Complying with our legal obligations (for example, keeping records of sales for HMRC purposes)
We will never sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it to train AI models that aren't part of features you've explicitly opted into.
Who we share data with
We use a small number of trusted service providers to operate watercraft. Each of these holds your data only for the specific purpose of providing their service to us, under their own data-protection commitments:
- Stripe — payment processing for Founder's Lifetime and any future paid plans
- Our email service provider — sending account and product emails (we'll specify when finalised)
- Our hosting and database provider — running the watercraft app and storing your account and session data
- Our metal-card engraving and shipping partner — fulfilling your founder card (shipping address only, used once per order)
We will not transfer your data outside the UK or the EU/EEA without ensuring appropriate safeguards (such as an adequacy decision or Standard Contractual Clauses) are in place.
How long we keep your data
- Account and session data — for as long as your watercraft account is active. If you close your account, we'll delete your account data within 30 days unless we're required to keep specific records (such as transaction records for HMRC).
- Transaction records (Stripe) — kept for the period required by UK tax law, typically 6 years.
- Email subscriptions — until you unsubscribe.
Your rights under UK GDPR
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Rectify any data that's inaccurate
- Delete your data ("the right to be forgotten")
- Restrict or object to how we process your data
- Port your data — receive it in a portable, machine-readable format and transfer it elsewhere
- Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent
- Complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (the UK's data protection regulator) if you think we've handled your data wrongly. Their contact details are at ico.org.uk/concerns.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@watercraft.app. We aim to respond within 30 days, the maximum required by UK GDPR.
Your data is yours. watercraft is built around the principle that you own the records you create. You can export your full session and catch history at any time, and delete your account whenever you want.
Cookies
The watercraft landing page uses minimal cookies — only what's needed to make the page work and remember basic preferences. We don't use third-party advertising trackers or analytics that profile you across the web. If we add analytics in future, it will be a privacy-respecting tool (such as Plausible or Fathom) that doesn't use personal cookies, and we'll update this policy.
Children
watercraft is intended for adults. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If you believe we have, please contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy in any meaningful way, we'll let you know by email (if you have an account or are on the waitlist) before the changes take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent revision.
